Sternal Fractures

Ongoing health issues following a sternal fracture may include chronic pain, limited chest mobility, and breathing difficulties due to impaired muscle function. Some individuals develop costochondritis or persistent tenderness at the fracture site. In rare cases, complications like non-union of the bone, or damage to underlying structures such as the heart or lungs, can arise. Patients may also experience prolonged fatigue or psychological distress related to the injury and recovery process. Although most fractures heal well, incomplete recovery of function or persistent symptoms can affect daily activities and quality of life.

Helpful Information

A sternal fracture is a break in the breastbone (sternum), located in the centre of the chest. This injury typically occurs due to blunt trauma, such as in a car accident where the chest strikes the steering wheel, or from direct force during physical activities. It can cause significant chest pain, swelling, and tenderness, making breathing and movement uncomfortable. Though relatively rare, sternal fractures can be serious if associated with damage to nearby organs like the heart or lungs. There may be some scenarios where the negligent actions or inactions of a third party cause this type of injury. In those scenarios, it may be possible to bring an injury compensation claim.

What are the most common causes of sternal fractures?

A common cause of this type of fracture is blunt chest trauma, typically from car accidents where the chest impacts the steering wheel or seatbelt. High-impact sports injuries, falls, and physical assaults can also lead to sternal fractures. In some cases, excessive pressure during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may result in a fracture. Though less common, severe coughing or certain medical conditions that weaken bones, such as osteoporosis, can also cause the sternum to break.

Can negligence cause this type of fracture?

Yes, reckless driving resulting in blunt chest trauma is a common cause of this type of injury. Similarly, inadequate safety measures in high-impact sports or workplaces may increase the risk of a sternal injury. In rare cases, excessive force during medical procedures, such as improper CPR technique, could also result in this type of fracture. If the injury is caused by another person’s reckless actions or failure to follow safety protocols, they may be considered negligent or liable for the harm caused.

What compensation can be claimed?

Compensation for a sternal fracture can cover a range of damages. This may include medical expenses for treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. Loss of earnings or reduced earning capacity can also be claimed if the injury affects the ability to work. Additionally, compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life may be sought. In some cases, future medical expenses or long-term care needs related to the injury might also be included in the claim.
