Examples of where the services of a notary public may be required include the following:

  1. In connection with foreign adoption (inter-country adoption) when the documents (or document dossier) required by the adoption authorities in the foreign county from where the couple hope to adopt need to be notarised.
  2. When deeds or documents need to be notarised for foreign jurisdictions in connection with foreign property transactions.
  3. When affidavits or other court or official documents need to be notarised for use in Court proceedings or official procedures in a foreign jurisdiction.
  4. When company constitutional or other official documentation is required to be authenticated pursuant to the Companies Acts for production outside the state.
  5. When powers of attorney need to be prepared or notarised or for use in foreign jurisdictions.
  6. When bills of exchange need to be noted or protested.
  7. When ships protests (or sea protests) need to be made in connection with maritime law or for insurance purposes.

When notarised documents are required to be produced to official agencies abroad they will often need to undergo the Apostille procedure administered by the Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs. We can arrange this directly via the Department’s Cork office. Countries not participating in the Apostille system can require legalisation of documents which we can arrange with that country’s embassy in this country as required.

If we have not acted for you before we will need to comply with Anti Money Laundering requirements to confirm your identity when we meet you for the first time. Please arrange to bring this with you when you attend for your appointment in order to avoid disappointment. Rules for notaries public and solicitors in relation to Anti Money Laundering requirements have become increasingly strict with the introduction of new legislation in July 2010 and regrettably, by law, we do not have any flexibility in this area. In order to confirm your identity we will generally require an original current passport together with a utility bill, bank statement or official item of correspondence issued within the last three months with proof of your address. Please give us a call in advance to confirm what you need to bring with you to comply with Anti Money Laundering requirements.
