More than 2,200 families across Ireland have been notified that their children’s hip surgeries are under review following growing concerns about the appropriateness of procedures carried out at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) hospitals and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh. Letters were issued to 1,757 families by CHI and 502 by Cappagh, covering surgeries performed as far back as 2010. In total, 2,320 cases are now under scrutiny, including 561 that have already been reviewed. The hospitals have committed to monitoring these children until they reach skeletal maturity, with additional updates to follow once a full clinical audit, focused on surgeries between 2021 and 2023, is completed.

High rates of inappropriate surgeries uncovered

The controversy escalated after an internal audit indicated that a large proportion of the surgeries might not have been necessary. Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty highlighted that 79% of reviewed procedures at Cappagh and 60% at Temple Street did not meet the standard criteria for surgical intervention. These revelations, initially raised by a whistleblower, have cast doubt on the clinical judgment exercised in these cases. Many families have reacted with anger and distress, fearing that their children may have undergone invasive and avoidable procedures.

Government response and call for accountability

Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stressing the importance of transparency and swift communication with families. She confirmed that the audit process is nearing completion and pledged that corrective action would follow where necessary. The minister also emphasised the need to rebuild public trust in the healthcare system, recognising the emotional toll the controversy has taken. With the final audit report expected soon, families and advocates are demanding accountability and assurances that such systemic failures will not be repeated.
