Nighttime Talk with Niall Boylan

Our much respected colleague and friend, Clíodhna O’Regan, appeared on Niall Boylan’s radio show Nighttime Talk recently. Clíodhna talked about the difficulties of divorce and how the family law department here at McCarthy + Co focuses reducing acrimony and finding ways to achieve early settlement over protracted court proceedings.

At one point in the show, Niall asks the perenial question “why does it take so long to get a divorce?” Here Clíodhna explains why the process can take many months or years.

“There’s no denying that there are delays in the legal system … it’s just unfortunate it’s a reality of the legal system but there are certain ways in which you can ensure that it moves as swiftly as possible. When you bring a divorce application, you issue it with a family law civil bill. So that’s your application form and the person bringing that is the applicant. And then the respondent, the person that you’re serving your divorce papers on, has certain timeframes to take certain steps. They have to enter an appearance within 10 days of receiving the civil bill. Those timeframes are very rarely adhered to, and you do need to get the consent of the other side.”
