Paul McCarthy Legal Executive

Paul has been a part of the legal team at McCarthy + Co since 2022.

Paul completed a degree in English and Latin at University College Cork in 1999, followed by a Master’s degree in Latin at University College Dublin. After this, he taught English as a foreign language in Italy and returned to Dublin to study law at the Honourable Society of Kings Inns. He qualified as a barrister in 2006 and spent two years as an apprentice in both the Dublin and Cork circuits. With the offer of a position teaching Latin, Paul transitioned into education, completing a Higher Diploma in 2010 and a Diploma in History in 2014, working subsequently as a secondary school teacher while also teaching English and History. This experience in communicating and presenting complex information in ways that can be readily understood has been an equally invaluable skill in both professions.

Despite his love of teaching, Paul was always interested in returning to the world of law and decided to assist (part-time initially) with his family’s firm on the personal injuries side of the business, doing discovery work. Discovery is an essential part of the preparation in personal injuries litigation where both the plaintiff and the defendant are required to present each other, pre-trial, with otherwise private documents (like pre-accident medical records, for example) which may contain information relevant to the injury in dispute. It is painstaking and methodical work, but rewarding to know that everything is correctly prepared in the progression of the case.

Paul also plays a central role in the creation of our website’s blog. This aims to provide clear and helpful information on common legal questions presented without the unnecessary jargon and confusing terminology that can be so off-putting for people when they initially have a legal query.
